Ringworm And Treatment For Persian Cats
Anyone who owns (or has owned) a Persian cat knows that some of them can be prone to having ringworm. A few of them can even be asystematic carriers which mean that they can have ringworm, but not show any signs of having it. However, they shed the spores and infect other cats in the household or can give it to you.
If left untreated, it can be very difficult to eradicate ringworm from a household because of the fungal spores which fly off the cat and then land some distance away or can get into the ventilation system of your home, on your furniture, your clothes, etc. Ringworm is also a systemic disease which is why it has to be treated with an oral medication as well as a fungal dip for the spores. The treatment for ringworm is a two prong approach or you will not fully eradicate it! The cat also has to be fully treated for 14-21 days with the oral medication and the fungal dip should be for at least a month or more.
Treatment
Sporanox® - oral medication. This medication should be administered under the care and guidance of a licensed veterinarian. We find that the liquid medication is easier to dose as it is more accurate for dosing. The dosing is .1cc per pound two times per day for 14-21 days. Do NOT skip a day! This medication is hard on the liver and the cat should have free access to water at all times! Please note: This medication is by prescription only and should be administered under the care and guidance of a licensed veterinarian.
Lym Dyp® is an antiseptic, keratolytic dip in scentine lime sulfur concentrate for the treatment of Sarcoptic mange. Lym Dyp® helps treat ringworm. "Dip" the cat at least once each week for a month, if not for two months. Mix the Lym Dyp® 4 ounces of Dyp to a gallon of water, and the easiest thing is to pour the solution over the cat. If the cat is wet beforehand, the Lym Dyp® seems to soak in better. Do NOT rinse off the Lym Dyp® . (Do NOT get the Lym Dyp® in the cat's eyes or mouth as it is very caustic.) Then dry the cat off.
Again, a word of caution, do NOT get this solution into the cat's eyes or mouth as it is extremely caustic - and do not get it into your eyes. Also, it is a good idea to wear gloves to protect your hands.
This stuff stinks like rotten eggs - the house will stink, the cat will stink - everything will stink. However, it will kill the spores on the cat. The Lym Dyp® coupled with the Sporanox® will definitely eradicate the ringworm and you and your Persian cat will be ringworm free. This is the only sure fire way to successfully treat ringworm in the Persian cat breed!!!
