Persian Cats and Gas Anesthesia

It is always a good idea to find a veterinarian who will use gas anesthesia for surgical procedures on your Persian cat. Persian cats do not do well with IV (intravenous) anesthesia drugs. With IV anesthesia drugs the cat can wake up from surgery appearing to recover, return home, and then crash which is heart-wrenching for all concerned.

In some vet clinics you many find:

  • They ONLY use injectable drugs instead of placing a tube to protect the patient's airway and administering gas anesthesia.

This is why gas anesthesia with an endotracheal tube is the standard of care. It can be controlled more easily and has fewer side effects. Also, as soon as the gas is turned off and oxygen is turned on the cat starts waking up. When using gas anesthesia the cat should NOT receive any pain medicines or sedatives to sedate the cat.

At Pelaqita Persians, we only use veterinarians who use gas anesthesia – we have seen the terrible results of IV anesthesia. Protect your cat – ask your veterinarian what type of anesthesia they use BEFORE your pet has surgery.
